m4a file format - what is this?

2 Lostwraith:Mmmm, seems that you are not well enough educated to read English propely
I said codec packs sux,but as you are not old enough to have mastered the full english language, then
you will be excused.
never mind,as you mature you will see, that you are not always right,& you don't always know better than other people.
In this case you have sprung to the defence of someone, you are not speaking yourself,
so I will treat your comments with the ignorance that they deserve.
The fact still remains that I & many other people will not download m4a until a full set of tools is available to set tags etc,I would not share a file with no (or hidden tag).
& I certainly would not download a codec or "pack of Codecs"
in order to play a file which is not recognised by any of the major operating systems.
I have the latest media pc with windows vista home premium,so I would never add unknown codecs
on somebody elses unproffessional opinion.

Fine, be that way, its all good. Though I'de like to add, I think the ignorance is on your part not mine. You are the one basically resisting an advancement in technology for little gain. I see that this is your opinion so I will respect that.
I dont think theres much more to say. m4a, love it or hate it, change or be left behind. People who dont figure out how to use it will sure be missing out at some time or another. I guess its a shame because its so simple, this is of course coming from my strict unprofessional opinion that should not be followed in any place or at any time or risk your computer suffering a fatal BSoD.

Taking a risk of being “not well enough educated” to express myself in English properly I would say
it is not a good manner to express what you thing about someone else in a forum such “m4a file format - what is this?”. More over, I think, it is reproachable especially for someone who has already known “that you are not always right,& you don't always know better than other people”.
And , is there a need “to defence of someone” and to defence from what?

m4a is way better than mp3 in terms of quality and yes, it is easily noticeable when you compare a track ripped in these two formats. As opposed to the "I WANT MP3" i say I PREFER M4A, OR EVEN BETTER FLAC FORMAT.
I noticed that a guy said the majority needs mp3 - may i ask what did the majority demand before the vinyl was introduced? They worshipped the phnograph :)

About format m4a , i have easy decision .
For fast listening , play file with VLC player .
For cuting , mixing , editing , you first encode file with Nero , very easy and fast way and then edit file with Sound Forge or Adobe Audition , the quality of the file is depending of first download source and of course your "Save as" format . M4a is not file with bad quality .

hello spasv, it is me again
im sorry but i have to post some things in here regarding ur xmradio mp4 stream propaganda
first a very little introduction to business:
xm is business
business wants to make profit=money by delivering as little as possible so its a good business
satellite bandwidth is limited and expensive
scientists develop new technologies to increase the efficiency
business uses the new technologies to make more money
C.R.E.A.M. got it?!
back to topic:
xm uses a proprietary aacplus from coding technologies
some facts of that codec are
so xm broadcasts with sound quality remarkably close to Compact Disc
this means 32 kbps to 48kbps to give some extra bits maybe 64 kbs
are u with me so far?
so now please tell me how it happens that a approx ~50 kbs xmradio stream bloats up to a
>200 kbs m4a audio file?!
post scriptum: peeps can read on here

I would continue showing m4a encoder advantages:
• I tried to recode 01_armin_van_buuren_-_a_state_of_trance_302_05-31-2007.mp3 preserving its 192 kbps quality (preserving almost the same signal spectrum). The result I have is an m4a @ 172 kbps with the (almost) same spectrum.
• When I encoded John Digweed at Transitions on XM80 31May-2007.m4a I had to go to a little bit higher bit rate. Then, it turned out the VBR avg 260 kbps m4a preserved the recorded signal spectrum better than an mp3@320 kbps.

xmradio has a ~50kbit stream and ur spectra shows u full cd-quality that has to be encoded
at a 260kbit vbr aac.

please use the web

get the needed infos here! and i hope ur also realizing there that u can drop ur funny spectra...
there they do talk about the best aac encoding results from real audio cds with some weird complex content like classical music. not a ridiculous xmradio stream!
what are u trying to sell here?!

Note: I use “almost” because I cannot avoid it. Without it I have to proof strictly the spectra are the same. But for a listener the music should be the same because the spectra, and accordingly the sound signals are very close.

YOU CANT' SAY SOMETHING SOUNDS BETTER BASED ON A PICTURE.
the only thing u can see most is the audiorange of the file and in case of mp3, the lowpass.

i also want to say that i dont have any problems with any codec.
only with some ways the codecs are used to compress audiofiles.
and some strange teqniques or validations to proove quality like using pictures
to rate audioquality ...

PS. Codec packs suck big time
Ya being able to play files you get from the internet really sucks
btw If you had one we wouldnt be here arguing about how to play a music file
