my personal opinion - yes, we should try. but first i should look into programming and weight out time waste to redo the code, then see if it's worth switching for those few months. if time required isn't that big , then sure... but i do not want to go against majority either.
actually I'm just worrying that our website is somehow going to get worse to work or something bad will happen or some problem will hapen....I don't know.... but if it doesn't...... then maby we can try for a while ....what do you say guys ?

hmmm, i understand that tribalmixes needs to evolve at some point,but......
Basically if you look a public tracker like tpb, there is a chance you might get a virus/trojan when you download stuff. I think tribalmixes needs to keep track who downloads and uploads torrents. i'm in favor of registering.
but if we decide to become public, uploaders should lock the content of a torrent with a password that only registered users can see. This means that everyone could smell the cookies, but not everyone could taste them. this also means, if someone downloads and decides to register, there is a large chance he will rate the torrent:)
evolve but stay private!:)

That is your call since Tribalmixes is not a democratic entity. But I'm guessing the whole point of dropping the registration would be to attract more users.
maybe focusing time on methods as mentioned before ,Video tutorials & possibly allowing new registered users free leech for the first few weeks etc may help.
If statistically you have data that shows many people visit the site but never register, then the first impressions that users get of tribalmixes needs to be readdressed.
Though quite often rather than 'change' many prefer to stick to the same old ways even if they show not to be giving the required results.
My life has Change that is a inevitable force that makes life sometimes demanding but also exciting .
I don't have access to the appropriate information to know, if technically, dropping the registration will allow the 'music' to be shared more easily or not.But surely it is the music that we should be using to promote tribalmixes music site. And having to register and not being able to give direct links to music are barriers for promotion.
How about dropping registration for just 'everlife' torrents ?
I.E - Trying out small unregistered methods to see how things go whilst being democratically sincere to the majority of users by keeping the majority of the site private.
If these small measures of' not registering' do show evidence that tribalmixes will grow and be a more active website as a direct result of not being private.
Then let the self evident results of our actions guide our way and not the presumptions of our imaginations.
For one path leads to self understanding whilst the other eventual self destruction
Or lets be sensible and not let our fears deny us a logical solution.
Or to quote a ancient proverb
" He/she who Registers will never be just another download statistic "
Or Mary had a little lamb it's fleece was white as snow and everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go .
But then one day Mary went to a slaughter house and the lamb because lamb chops.
I.E - The message being don't be a sheep & follow Mary because Mary may not be listening to the music
Glad to make things clear
Music is physics brought to life with biology.

tribalmixes.com is a 'tracker', we do not store mp3s on our server (except the tm-radio mp3s), we actually track the torrents, i.e. keeping lists of sources where to get them.

funny. only the problem is... nowadays mostly all torrents sooner or later become everlife (ratio-free). such an idea has already been out there, but was let go of. now we could do something... maybe put a line.. you know, there're a few types of ratio-free torrents:
1) those that are everlife from the very beginning of their existence (mostly tm radio and local djs)
1.a) those that are close to or over 1GB in size (mega-packs, larger videos)
2) those that become everlife on 100 snatches (sometimes 5-6 hours after upload, sometimes - 3 months later)
3) those that become everlife at the end of their life cycle (180 days as of right now) if 'tm-mixes' or 'tm-only' are present among torrents' categories (naturally, torrents recorded for tm by tm-users).
so which ratio-free torrents should we allow without registration? which numbers? now
so all in all, allowing unregistered users to get only ratio-free torrents either doesn't make sense, or turns into a loss for us.. all or nothing, i say.. especially that it's simply a couple of extra lines of code to make only ratio-free torrents to be public, so it's nothing special, really...
Good idea Slash but i suggest to make the torrent be public after 24 hrs. (for an example) since the torrent be free-ratio, To give the advantage to TM members first
Why not make a limit of 1 or 2 GB for free??
after that one could either register to download more and keep up a good ratio... otherwise he wont be able to download more.... then the site would be grabbing more members and listeners but only the interested ones would register.... and ones who r not interested would be able to download only a limited amount which wont be a huge deal

if its a must,we can make only ratio free torrents open for public & make them register in order to download other torrents...

(1) is not really interesting for outsiders (passerby-s), right? who normally wants to download Biontek's mixes, if they don't know him personally (most likely through the tracker's community)? no offense to Biontek, but name doesn't say anything to me when i don't know who you are... will there be results? dunno...
so which ratio-free torrents should we allow without registration? which numbers? now
for this point i think that we are providing to every one from outside our community the music that we promote and the website sponsor over the radio as how mych we think that these ppl are talented , and in this case we will provide to those djs ( Unknown to outsiders ) more listeners .
For unregistered users we will be providing sets that they will really like and they will be really happy to join for, and get involve in such a community as they will think that we provide promoting good talents , and if he/she is talented he/she will be sure that he will get promoted due to his talent not because of his name !!

1.a) could produce good demanded names, like Cattaneo and Digweed, but if those become popular, then it's a big hit on people's bandwidth, which is one of the main concerns throughout this conversation.
And in this point i think we can only share the Mega Packs for the top 10 Rated names over the E-browser .
Only Mega packs to show every one how huge our library for those djs is !!!
My monthly bandwidth is 60Gb... I don't mind seeding out to TM users but I have no desire to share my precious limited bandwidth with non members. I'd be paying for them to leech !!! OMG ... this could be a nightmare.

omfg
i hope you have a huge speed to balance that limit cuz i have unlimited bandwidth :)
In the end there'd only be leechers... if somenone is too lazy to register, they will also be lazy to seed!

I think that if you intend to open things up,then it should only be with new uploads, and keep the megapacks and the archives only for those who have taken the time to register.
here i'd like to correct this misunderstanding, or maybe an unclear area... the only thing to become public is access to .torrent-files. nothing else will change even a little bit. and more, due to hardship of programming all this, only new torrents will be available publicly, all old torrents (shared 5 minutes or 5 years before this "switch" happens) will only be available after registration. that is exactly as Busker says above.
the evaluation part i mean the *nova* indexing, will take time and that search engine crawlers to point traffic to TM will not happen right away it will take time so its for sure that the first month of being public will be any of harm there are other technical things i have no idea about
another thing might be obstructed with words here. tribalmixes.com is a private site, yes, - you need to register to get the best fruit here - torrents, and then - mixes. but! site is wide-open for search engines and crawlers, and it's been so for quite a while now, maybe a year since i've actually opened pretty much all the site to be scanned without registering, so that google-bot and other crawlers could scan it and report it back on searches and stuff. to be specific: torrent-browse, torrent-details, dj-list aka e-browser with all its info (forums have been accessible to read without registering all these years), and since that change we did see a substantial increase in new users' registrations - they doubled. so, making the site public is still bound to the topic - simply allowing people to take .torrent-files without registration, and by removing "private flag" from torrents, - letting them find seeds without DHT, although all new clients respect "privat flag" and don't allow using DHT when it's set, so even if (and it is possible) people get .torrent-files now - they cannot download anything at all, "private flag" makes sure of that!
So maybe on the internet their are many people who think 'why bother firstly visiting Tribalmixes and Registering to get music, when their are a thousand and one sites that I can download music Instantly and directly onto my mp3 player within 2 minutes (depending on file size, bandwidth etc)'
that's exactly what i've mentioned a few posts above: it is helluva easier to simply get files from download sites, and if you're not into getting dozens of mp3s daily, - just 1 or 2 per day/week or something, - you won't even get stopped by the file-storing sites' bogus transfer limits. so basically: yes, this is very true.. i did say before: when we started, sites like megaupload and sendspace were just just getting on the big scene, so we were not worried about them taking away "our people" =) but during last 5 years, these *file-share* sites have become very numerous and cheap to use, so some people gradually switched to using them...
Tribalmixes takes a little more getting in too or learning, especially for people who may be just getting interested in electronic/dance music & have a limited amount of pc knowledge and possibly time they can spend when they first visit this site. And it may of been only this initial interests in music that got them to this site in the first place .So lets presume they do decide to register. How do I download these torrent thingys? ,then installing a torrent program and learning to configure and use it .Can I download all I want like 'direct link' sites or will I be banned for downloading two many mixes or made to feel ungrateful simply because I'm not into writing comments on websites?,
mmmmm......?
Think I will just go back to www.directeasy&quit.com.
that is, actually, soon going to be fixed. in a way, of course. i mean, there will be a good help soon to gently ease the new users into our melting pot - a short instructional video. the work on this has been going on for a couple of months already, it's performed (solely, right now) by ISEEYOURSOUL, and is coming to its first stage where main backbone of it can be seen, that's where i'm joining into the project, and soon (maybe another couple of months or longer) it will be out there. not only we're going to put it on youtube with headline like "get free club music" or something, we're also going to place it on the main page, so that one mouse-click (or even mouse-over) will start streaming it, and within 2-3 minutes any person will be able to get the whole concept of tribalmixes.com before actually registering, so this gray area is actually covered.. =)
and the last thing... i am still not swayed towards any of the 2 choices: stay as we are, or allow public downloads? both ways have strong arguments (i am listing only 'summation of negative'), main one for the old-ways being "existing users will not like it (and, possibly, quit), why chase an eagle (the unclear benefits of this 'public act'), when you have a little birdie in your hands", while main idea of the opposition is "increases in bandwidth consumption of the end-user, possible decreases in site's activity, 'cause even some of the veterans will log-out and continue using site as unregistered users". but i have not made my decision yet. still open for discussion. i need more motivation. this is only because programming might be hard, lots of time will be wasted, just to revert to the old ways in a few months of the trial period? excuse me, but i'd like to spend this time on some more promising beginnings...
