If I use my PC to mine crypto currency whenever I feel like doing so, and you have a way for me to donate, that would be fine, but making it an integrated part of the site is a huge red flag for me. It is very inefficient to mine in this way with the consumer GPU's out now as well, and could result in general system slowdown when your site is open on an end-user's computer. Also on the user experience side of things, some PC configurations could run your site sub-optimally and give new/returning users a bad experience potentially.

Mordecai, after some testing and some thinking...
TM does not have ANY advertising [I did not realise this until after disabling addblockplus]
This means TM has relied on Donations which seems to have worked thus far.
Now, if one has a choice between advertising or mining..... food for thought!
Yes the Mining does use a small amount of CPU, but bearable and adjustable to suit ones system capability to have minimal impact.
Thus I think your 'could' and 'potentially' are not really well founded assumptions.

Ah, I just found a possible issue with this slash!
Multiple tabs seems to equal multiple miners operating thus increasing the CPU usage!
You may want to see if some settings can be changed so it only operates on the first tab?!

A bit hard to tell though. Seems to make some weird behaviour with multi tabs anyhow.

this was my first train of thought of concern, but then i noticed it only runs from the newly opened tab. if it was mining in a different tab - that one stops. so with the same instance of browser it will only work in 1 tab. i tested it too earlier. otherwise wouldn't have set it up. i like many tabs...
multiple browser windows and multiple browsers - yes, those do operate all together. but then there's no way to make sure it can only be 1.. in that case it screws things up for those running multiple pcs on same network.. if i were to dedicate 1 just to mining, i wouldn't be able to mine on some other one..
anyways we are in testing mode.. nothing is final.
and right you are, tribalmixes hasn't had any irrelevant ads for maybe 6-7 years. there were relevant ones that were shown only to not-logged-in and warned users, but those are also gone like 2-3 years...

you can just turn it off and continue using the site. i am being fully open about it, not trying to sneak it in to steal some of your cpu power (yes, this one uses CPU power, with GPU there is no advantage in this case, it is browser too, so hard to access GPU). you have a message telling there's mining happening, plus explanations, plus an email.. what flags are you talking about? plus tribalmixes.com is used 95% on desktops, so no worries almost about smartphones overheating.. all in all i think i've been quite candid so there's no need to be upset. i thought those who never donated would welcome this opportunity to give back somehow.. but we'll see...
so far half a day of initial mining have brought 0.002XMR which is 0.002x90USD = 20 cents.. if it goes being this little - i will surely remove it..

Just turn the miner off if you don't want to do it. It's not obligatory

As its been said by other comments you can turn this off and/or configure this in your profile settings to the bare mininum, so you can give something back, which to date you haven't (2 comments in 5 years doesn't quantify anything).
That doesnt sound like someone to me who uses the site, nor have you engaged in anything over the years. Its an unobtrusive way of giving something back to the running and continious support of tribalmixes, as Slash spends a great deal of time and effort to continually run and configure tribalmixes/tm-radio for your continued use.

I'm running Adblock Plus here and it's not preventing the mining script from running.

I have shutdown mining here on TM for the moment as I have possible hardware issues with my firewall.
I do not know if this mining is related or not. test, test, and test again!

not sure about this but it seems after shutting down in settings on TM that the miner still continues to run without authorisation,'
If this is true then it is extremely concerning
investigating further and will post conclusions here

you gotta completely close all tabs with tribalmixes to stop all the mining or adjust settings. if you change settings while thing is mining in another tab - nothing will change. try open 1 page only and change settings right in that tab and see...

thanks slash, yes I am wise to that situation.
however I have some odd issues here with hardware firewall, thus isolating the miner and blocking it from operating at all is a wise move. Also isolating other things too, I will cease seeding torrents for a time shortly.
the more I read about this miner the less I trust it and after seeing the [not yet verified] behaviour that seems to indicate it continues to operate when switched off simply is quite alarming

script still loads whether you mine or not. only it doesn't mine if you don't want it to.
maybe i should hide it completely if user doesn't want to mine. but then when they are ready to mine - it won't be there...

haha, not quite slash, as I use NoScript in order to prevent and control the scripts on websites, thus coinhive is never loaded
NoScript can be got here https://noscript.net/ for anyone interested in using this tool

it seems that it will not run if you have addblockplus operating.
for me, I do not like the idea of disabling addblockplus
I will do some testing
