INTERNATIONAL DJ-ING COMPETITION 2008
rules, official explanations, related matters, everything else...

Quote: IDC 2008 time-table (pre-final version, final schedule will be set on Jan 25).

[December 12th, 2007 to January 11th] team and djs submissions, status upgrades, preparations, etc
[January 12th, 2008 to January 25th, 2008] submission of the IDC music from Contestants, final time-table (as we do not know how much music will there be, thus how much time to allow for judges)
[January 26th, 2008 to February 15th, 2008] or so, we'll see - the Judgment Period, when judges are to download all the music and to judge it, as well as official listeners to snatch at least 55% of the torrents. only Judges and Official Listeners can submit their grades at this time.
[February 16th - February 22nd = Judgment DAY time-spot] when all the scores from Judges will be finalized and finished, and submitted, and all the ratings from Listeners also finished, as well as Supporters will also be allowed to vote and their ratings summarized, all IDC 2008 results should be available by the end of that time - on 22nd of Feb or so - The Judgment DAY itself...

Quote: INTERNATIONAL DJ-ING COMPETITION 2008 RULES AND REGULATIONS ver 1.01a (24dec07)

On entering the contest...

  • only complete teams of 5 (five) DJs residing at or coming from the same country will be able to enter this contest. DJs traveling, studying or simply living abroad can still act on behalf of their birth country.
  • at least 2 of the team members must be tribalmixes.com community members by the time the team is submitted.
  • NEW select countries can be represented by MORE THAN 1 TEAM, according to a simple scheme: if your country was one of the top 8 last year - 2 teams will be allowed to participate this year's contest, otherwise only one team advances. be that more teams from a country want to participate than allowed for that country, best team will be selected by the means of highest Popularity Ratings from [e]-browser, all members' personal ratings summarized as team rating.
  • NEW each team must assign a "captain" which will be responsible for communication with the organizing committee, as well as timely music and info submissions (all djs missing in [e]-browser must be entered there before the team is revealed, best by contacting [e]-ditors). those DJs personally organizing the teams would usually and most likely pronounced captains. if any problems are met with finding and pronouncing team captain, a well trusted and tm-community-known person not on the team can be made captain..
  • teams can enter the contest by Saturday, 12th of January, 2007.

    On the IDC 2008 music...

  • technical: each DJ has to provide 1hr long recording of live dj session. music has to be at least 192kbps 44khz quality, 128kbps is also accepted, with explanation of the reasons. good quality vbr with an average of 160kbps or around that will also be accepted.
  • NEW team presentation of 5 distinctly different major music genres, such as trance, tribal, breaks etc, will be specifically higher rewarded by judges, where they will be able to givew extra points to the teams to reward their diversity.
  • as if was stated a year ago, we're trying to insist on first hand musical experience, meaning all dj mixes, all entries are strongly recommended to be exclusively premixed or recorded specially for this competition, with a great expectation of keeping the music unaired and un-publicly-heard until all of the teams' music sets are revealed to the world.
  • timeline:: teams can submit their contest music by Saturday, January 25th of 2008.

On the public JURY and judging

  • every website community member can become a part of IDC 2008, and temporary (up until a few weeks after the final results are published in 2008) upgrade their status to one of the following: Judge, Contestant, Listener, Supporter (an "upgrade" will result into several possible idc functions, as described below, and special signs of honor - little pictures - added to nickname everywhere throughout the website's pages when contest starts).
  • an Honorary IDC 2008 Judge will have to commit to the IDC in full power, as Judges will be required to listen to up to 4-5 hours of IDC music per day (when the judgment time period comes), and submit their grades on the 2 different aspects - DJ work (mixing, scratching, technical side) and Track-List (Selection of tracks, their arrangement, etc) - on the scale of 1 to 5, commenting on at least 1-2 sets per team. Judges will have to stay rather country-insensitive, show cold judgment and no priorities or favorites. Judges will be disqualified if noticed to intentionally rate their home-country-djs higher than other djs. it will only be Judges' votes that will have affect on the final IDC 2008 standings. if newly promoted Judge has community member class less than V.I.P., it will be upgraded to V.I.P. for the time of the competition.
  • an IDC Contestant will be any DJ participating in the IDC 2008. Contestants will have to be a part of a "team" by the time Competition kicks off, or their upgraded status will be downgraded, as it will be on anyone falsely registering as IDC Contestant, and a warning of up to 1 month long will be issued..
  • an Official IDC 2008 Listener will be required to download at least 55% of all IDC torrents by the time the Judgment Period starts, or 75% of them by the Judgment DAY time-spot. listeners will be allowed to vote alongside with Judges, at the same time, their votes won't have to be on all the sets, but only on those they've snatched, and listeners' ratings and votes will be going to the Unofficial IDC 2008 standings, as that "Best DJ in competition", "best house dj", "best trance dj", "best tracklist" etc. it is expected that Official Listeners will have the main role in finding out "best in..." titles assignments.
  • an official IDC 2008 Supporter will be something similar to the Official Listener, only Supporters will only have to download at least 25% of the sets by the Judgment DAY time-spot, they will be allowed to cast their votes and ratings at the last week of the Competition.
  • people that will decide not to "upgrade" their status for the time of the IDC 2008, will still be allowed to cast their votes, again affecting only the unofficial IDC 2008 ratings and standings, and the time to do it will be the week before the judgment DAY.

i really like the idea of countries having more than one team ...but this way well have to unify the number of teams for each country ...say 2 teams per ??....and maybe the teams dont have to be based on countries it could be free lancing this time each team has members from all over the world :D ...how does that sound ??
    enenlightning *deepsoulfunk* on November 13th, 2007 / post 22448
i dont like the the more than 1 team per countrey.. sounds kinda unfair.. lets say hungry has 2 teams and egypt 3.. of course eqypt has a bigger chance to win
but overall it sounds really amazing

untill now all rules are good evreything is fair but as zahran said u should make a limit for groups from same country and hey zahran since ur one of the best djs here in egypt can i join this year egypts group cause i dont know who to ask  :-D
    zahranlightning Moderator on November 13th, 2007 / post 22453
or we can just increse each country's team members to 8 or 9 or maybe even 10 ..how does that sound ?

" Grand Jury members will be REQUIRED not to show any personal attraction preferences to their fellow country team(s), if "home-team" will be found judged much higher than any other team, whole jurors vote will be dropped and person officially dropped from the Jury list."

Make the sets anonymous and have non-jury admins be able to identify which is which.  This will eliminate the national bias...

Suspense is back to the website :mml:

I think that if it's one team with 5 members for one country so that's maybe a 15 member for 3 teams in one country which means 150 hrs of music and maybe there will be a mess and it will take a long time in judging, but what about making the competition in certain genre like there will be a qualifications from 50 dj from different countries in the Tribal music as an example then they will be only 3 winners in the end in every genre, and this winner represent his country in this genre. I think that will make it easier. :smartass:

hope this will be like the last one it was awesome having a lot of great music

well, so far my opinion(s) and personal info...

last night (as many nights before, and i'm sure - a million nights ahead of me...) i fell asleep in the chair, and didn't even finish the rules, i wanted to post a little more on the judging, and some other stuff, but when i woke up in the middle of the night, i couldn't think of idc, simply posted what i've written so far, and went to bed to keep my dream alive... anyways, this is just another point on how tired i am generally and this is like "don't blame me later for a mess that i was predicting..." =) just kidding. we'll try to do everything without any mess this time.. i really like you guys talking about this stuff with me, so lets keep this on for a week or two, or however much it takes, and make it a solid competition.

i'll just post a few ideas here now, which will basically agree or disagree with your, guys, suggestions...

  • having three teams will not increase chances of winning, simply because 3 teams will include 15 people, lets say, 5 of them are supah-good, and 10 just good, right, averaging 2 supah-good djs per team, and then there's 1 team made out of these 5 supah-good djs, which set will have better chances? the second set, with only 1 team and 5 supah-good djs, since all 5 talents are in the same team, which in the first set, only 1-2 talents are in each team, and about 3-4 average djs.. i'm not trying to mark anyone up with my words, i'm just hypothetically speaking here... so having more than 1 team per country will only keep fighting and arguing down, which we approve, because all djs wishing to take part will be able to, as long as they make up a team.

  • anonymous sets... this was a great idea.. a year ago.. but we turned it down.. look at any big competitions on TV, where judges are present and judging... how does it happen there? people come out, perform (compete/play/whatever), and then they wait for the judges to grade their "deeds". all judges are sitting right there, they pull out their marks and yell them out, or put them into computer, anyways, the idea is - as soon as performance is over, - judges are to work.. but along the way, all WORLD have seen the performance, and now waiting for the judges' grades.. we're a little different here, - we're not present in the same room, thus there aren't any pressure or "what will they say if i rate this low" type of thing, everyone can rate sets the way they want and basically noone can look you in the eyes and say "man, you're not true to this team", or "why did you overrate your country"... so basically we want to keep this open structure, we wanna let everyone in on the cake, and the judgment day as well... and the main problem here - if we do stuff anonymously, - we cannot share it with all the community, because who wants to download 5 sets of "who knows who played them"... and if there's 20 teams? well, 100 of sets, who will want to rename them later, when they find out that this set was played by this dj, and that - by that dj... i personally will say "who cares, it's all wonderful music", and won't bother renaming sets.. and this is a total disrespect to djs, who will put their time/money/hardwork into their sets, just to be presented as "unknown77 - idc entry.mp3"... and then again, all the good info in the id3v2 tags - we gotta erase it... anyways, after all this said, i think "anonymous situation" makes alot of sense, but we should really rely on people as their judging will be honest... after all, organizers will be preselecting judges, trying to keep them diverse and trustful...

  • and what else... what else... ghm... ah.. i was told i didn't mention the way teams should be assembled.. well, it's on your own consideration, my friends... feel powerful and trusted enough? please, do us all a favor, go ahead and gather up 4 more talents and register your team! i honestly have no idea how can i point out the ways for teams to be assembled... i can't tell "zahran, you're responsible for egyptian teams", because i don't even know, if zahran will be participating, and on top of that, even if he does, he can simply arrange a call to all egyptians saying "all who wants to take part - go through me", and then select 4 best djs out of 15 who wanted to take part, and make 1 very strong team, and then simply heads/tails arrange other 10 djs into 2 more teams.. you know what i mean? little history... how did the 12 teams of IDC 2007 appear? well, Argentina was assembled by Alejandro Rado, he contacted all other djs and made up the ream, Bulgaria, ghm, can't say exactly, but i think it was MuscleTech, who initiated it all, basically with Keekos and Spr they did, and what do you think now? spr has assembled new Bulgarian team MONTHS AGO, been bothering everyone with it, noone noticed? jk. =) then Canada was put together by M Fawzy, Egypt - by zahran, Germany - by Sonic.fm radio founder, who wasn't even on the team (hence an example of a "trusted outsider" making up the team), Greece came by means of StereoK. teams Holland, Lithuania and Spain have simply popped up all of a sudden, and entered the contest, of course there were leaders there as well (i'm not sure, but i think they were Dj SMiley, Jacon Jeffs and Sunnteck respectively), Hungarian team mostly by means of Gabriel A Dawn, Romanian team put together by DJ Edi, Russian team... well... me and Python... anyways, all this i'm saying here because 9 out of these 12 teams i personally asked djs to try and get their friends and stuff to make up a team. 3 other teams didn't even need a personal invitation - they gathered up and came themselves... so... it's all in your hands, my friends!! they don't want you on their team - don't get upset, just make up your own team!

  • as for the jury again... well.. we need more thinking... but i think, having maybe 40-50 officially registered judges, resulting maybe in 20-30 final judgments, since i'm sure half of the judges will bail out there, - that will be pretty good... who knows.. maybe there will be 100 of judges... i'd like that... but who knows...

  • last year there were ideas and they seem to be popping up now again, well... ideas about giving more than just 1st place in the IDC 2008, but finding out who had most professional set, who did best flawless transactions, who matched beats best, who chose best tracklist, who was best in tribal genre, who did best in trance, who was mostly beloved by judges and/or by public, who who who... to summarize, these could be additional "contests", but not really contests but more like people/judges could give out more "titles" to the participants, like "best in tribal" or "best in Egypt"... so... we could think more of that, and bring out several more "chances to win" (something)... i think those are good ideas, we just didn't brainstorm them more last year, cause everyone was tired by the end of it all... so... what am i saying here? nothing... just... wishing it all goes the way we want it to go!! =) and i'm going to place a link on the tabs now...
