Adding new CATEGORIES, suggest yours!!

slash ProDanceCulture on September 22nd, 2009 / post 30991
right now we have 18 categories. these genres cover most of the edm. but of course not all of it. in the light of recent changes, category icons will also be changed. and thus new icons and categories can be created, to bring more order and extras into torrent-browsing.

so far changes being 3 following categories:
  • adding category HARD (for hard-style/core/trance)
  • adding category (TM) MIXES (mainly for tribalmixes community releases, promos, demos and podcasts of (tm)-local DJs, simply "mixed by community")
  • adding category (TM) ONLY  (mainly for tribalmixes community own radio recordings, or any other recordings available only for (tm) and only on (tm), at least originally)

What other genres of today's EDM are we missing??? or even what other features would you like to see through genre icons, including easy filtering and additional genres on torrents-page, for example.

I like this idea , but I don't know what to add , Maybe Tech Minimal , Minimal Tribal , Minimal Progressive , Tech progressive .... I think that will make it easier for many ppl to find what exactly they are looking for.

I don't think we should add any new categories, tbh, too many possibilities just make users confused. We should only do the TM-ones (recorded for TM/mixed for TM).

I think that the break down of genres that we have now is sufficient. Personally now that i have worked out how to get the sub genres to stay up on the screen instead of disappearing when you mouse scroll over them, it is much easier to see what the exact genres of a file are (Thanks Slash) This also gives me more confidence to put multiple genres on my uploads.

I like the idea of identifying mixes recorded or mixed for Tribalmixes.

Maybe psy goa or something similar can be replaced with hard style?

no suggestions, kinda.. well, that's pretty much what i've expected. i was waiting more for Willy's suggestions coming from everyone - minimal techno, tech-tribe, others... and i don't think prog can be minimal, that's personally for Willy! =) and well, to tell you the truth, i wouldn't agree to such additions simply because they can and must be shown with additional genres.

i was looking more for something we're missing... like "disco". or maybe "jungle", but few lovers of such will not raise any campaign to incorporate these styles into our line-up. i still want to add "hard", simply because it's been and is an irremovable part of edm, and recently some sets been popping up that are best described as "hard", not "mist" or others..

i have all the icons ready, only need to remake the 2 new ones with (tm), since they are a bit none-contrast against dark backgrounds, otherwise it's all about to be put into our daily lives.

if there are still smart suggestions here - i can look into them, otherwise in an hour or two i will put out new genre icons.

another question here is... would someone like to make those icons for tribalmixes?? i did make this 3rd version (yeah, it's going to be 3rd version of them, new ones are supposedly vista style, hehe), but i will consider replacing them with a better variant. or adding other variants to be set through outlook, what about that?

    Quote taken from ;-

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribal_house

'There is no clear-cut definition of tribal house music, instead tracks are usually classified or perceived as tribal because of their live sound. Tribal house is reminiscent of the ethnic music of various tribes of Africa and South America, and it is not unusual for this music to feature chanting and ululation as a cappellas. Tribal music can be produced with either live (ie. with real drums and instruments) or digital instrumentation: however, live-produced music of this sort in the purest sense is seen as ethnic, while digital tribal music is called 'tribal house'.'

This site should have a Ethnic Music Category to promote music that is either played with real drums or music that has that purest type of Tribal sound.

The current Tribal Categorie is not sufficient. One Mix labeled in the 'Tribal' Category on tribal mixers can sound very processed and electronic whilst another in the same category can sound quite natural with many real instruments, even though it may still be  predominately synthesised or electronic dance music the style sounds 'Ethnic or natural' and should have it's own category.

so to quote again " however, live-produced music of this sort in the purest sense is seen as ethnic, while digital tribal music is called 'tribal house'."

    Ethnic Tribal Category please !!!

the presence of a category will not bring this type of music into rotation. and honestly there's not too much of this type of tribal online here. this was my motivation about "hard", not to add it, i mean. that and overcrowding initial choice.

what i wanted to add in general, is that both new categories (tm) Only & (tm) mixes will possess a special power: at the end of days of a torrent's lifespan (180 days right now), torrents within these two categories will be automatically turned undead, instead of being removed from the site. so basically downloading such torrents will prove some good help in a long run... =)

And you don't think that it has a place here?.

The music from which all music originated?.

Granted 'Live' drum music is not as easily found as 'electronic' music. For one it's not as straight forward to make as 'electronic' .Natural drum music usually has to be 'Played' not 'Produced'.

But contrary to your 'not too much of this type' their is plenty of mixers here that have sampled 'live' single shot ethnic drums or ethnic style drum recordings into their tracks .
Much of 'electronic' music today is using 'samplers' that are basically just using 'natural' instruments in a digital format.
When this is done well the track sounds very ethnic, natural, like real drummers are playing it

AMBIENT would be a great new catagory!

took this from wiki to give people a description.

Ambient music is a musical genre closely related to or also seen as a sub-genre of New Age music, that focuses largely on the timbral characteristics of sounds, often organized or performed to evoke an "atmospheric",[1]"visual"[2]or "unobtrusive" quality...
Ambient and New Age music have influenced many other genres, most remarkably some forms of rhythmic music presented in chill-out rooms at raves and other dance events, with the intention of creating a calmer, relaxed atmosphere for ravers to take a break from dancing.

I suppose any addition to category's will simplify finding music.

I like 'Liquid drum & bass also which as a very different feel than Drum & Bass.

So adding more category's can only help users find the kinds of music they are looking for.

Music is forever changing.A infinite number of styles, sequences, patterns or Rhythms are available .Whether the music is being played directly by a human hand,a musician able to make up limitless Rhythmical variations by feeling her/his way through the music  or produced using the infinite mathematical possibilities of a computer, the sound goes on for ever simply because that is what it is and has always been, infinite in nature, as life   .

So this site should be more adaptable .

    More genre Categories
